One is tempted to say that this 2024 Sony Classical release by violinist Luka Faulisi and the {oh!} Orkiestra of Poland is for listeners who have had it up to here with historical performances. Faulisi's isn't just old-school Vivaldi; it is Vivaldi as it might have been played by Paganini if Vivaldi's music had been known at that time. Far from observing precedents set by earlier players, Faulisi freely says that he listened to as little Four Seasons as possible (a tall order in the case of this work) and then only to find places where he could depart from earlier models. He takes blistering tempos, adds percussion in spots, and, most strikingly, departs from the sacrosanct Baroque pulse to add a good deal of tempo rubato. It is all going to be a matter of taste, but a couple of observations may be hazarded. First, Faulisi has the chops to pull this off; this early 20-something player has not only technical fluency but flair, and second, Faulisi and the orchestra offer as entr'actes some pieces akin to the Four Seasons in spirit, the traditional Cant des Ocells from Catalonia, "The Autumn Song" from Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, Op. 37b, and a Nocturne by Lili Boulanger. These are a nice change from the usual pairings, like Piazzolla's Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas ("Buenos Aires Four Seasons"). Will Faulisi's approach catch on? It is hard to say, but the kid gets points for originality.
