With their first album in eight years, Justice—that is, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay—set out to make disco/funk and electronic music "coexist, but not in a peaceful way. We like this idea of making them fight a bit for attention." Heavy "Generator" certainly sounds like it's itching for a fight, muscling in immediately with synthwave and gabber vibes and a fuzzy nod to Joey Beltram's "Mentasm," a rave classic that's been already sampled by everyone from Rammstein to The Prodigy to Alec Empire. But Justice puts on the ritz, pairing the hardcore techno with strings that walk the line between disco and old-school murder-mystery movie soundtrack, and it's a joy. Hyperdrama is already being called a throwback to the French duo's mid-aughts glory days; truthfully, it might even be better: like a VIP version of Cross. "Neverender" is absolutely luxe—as shiny, sharp and cool as a knife blade—and features Tame Impala's Kevin Parker hitting the yacht-rock high notes. Parker shows up again on "One Night/All Night," a liquid glide with rubber-band snap that, Augé and de Rosnay say, is meant to sound as if "a dark/techno iteration of Justice had found a sample of a disco iteration of Kevin Parker." The Hyperdrama guest list is stellar. Eritrean songbird Rimon silkily slides in for "Afterimage" and English psych-pop twins George and Harry Flint of the Flints put a spacey sheen on swaggering "Mannequin Love." Groovy "Saturnine" is awash in reverb and dares to punctuate Miguel's falsetto croon ("Flashes in waves don't try to save me now") with an old-fashioned elevator arrival bell. Thundercat's smooth croon pours on like a calming agent over the numbing industrial brainwash. The party takes a breather with "Explorer," a collaboration with New Zealand artist Connan Mockasin, while "Moonlight Rendez-vous" puts Adrien Soleiman's '80s smooth-pop saxophone in the spotlight. The influences are top-notch, too. "Incognito" samples  "New Dream" by Clay Pedrini but warps the snippet until it boomerangs; it feels both dangerous and giddy, like being stuck in a fun house hall or mirrors. And dancefloor-insistent "Dear Alan" is a feel-good delight that pays tribute to French house legend Alan Braxe. Disco strides into the ring with a funky bassline and booty-shake percussion—only to elide into retro-futuristic space electro, like the classic arcade game Centipede at its most manic. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
