Cindy
An indie group based in San Francisco, Cindy puts a spare, homespun spin on slowcore and indie pop influences. The band released their first album, Cindy, in 2018, before adding a devoted keyboardist to the lineup. The resulting quartet went on to produce more of their murmured, languidly catchy ruminations on albums including 2020's Free Advice before leader Karina Gill took a more openly collaborative approach to a similar end on 2023's Why Not Now?
Cindy lead singer Karina Gill first picked up a guitar in 2016, and by late 2018, she had a band and a self-produced debut album, Cindy. It featured bandmates Simon Phillips (drums, vocals) and Jesse Jackson (bass, vocals, synthesizer), with additional guitar by Eric Grotke. Adding keyboard specialist Aaron Diko to the lineup of Gill, Phillips, and Jackson, Cindy returned with Free Advice on Paisley Shirt Records in June 2020. The album got a vinyl release by Tough Love/Mt. St. Mtn. that November. With Gill starting up another project, Flowertown, in the meantime, the four-piece issued their third studio album, 1:2, on Tough Love/Mt. St. Mtn. (U.S.)/Paisley Shirt (cassette) in September of 2021.
Gill changed up the approach to Cindy's fourth album, opting to work alongside Diko to develop songs and to delve into the greater San Francisco indie pop scene looking for musicians. The resulting Why Not Now? was ultimately the work of a performance collective consisting of members April Magazine, the Telephone Numbers, and Sad Eyed Beatniks as well as Flowertown, just to name a few. Remaining introverted and similarly pondering in nature, it arrived on Tough Love/Mt. St. Mtn. in April of 2023.
